Aged 20 he may be, but FC’s latest saviour extraordinaire Aaron Grundy has, in his first three years of professional football, had a baptism of fire worthy of any high flyer.

But despite the numerous tests and setbacks, Grundy had fought on and earned plaudits from players and fans alike- and he has had such a fruitful time with FC.

To say it had been a fantastic month is not an understatement with Grundy conceding just four goals in five league games against quality opposition, It started with a man-of-the-match performance in a comfortable 3-0 defeat against current league leaders Skelmersdale followed by a second clean sheet to then first placed Bamber Bridge who had beaten the Reds 3-0 on the same ground earlier in the season. More recently, there was a breathtaking display of agility and concentration against promotion rivals Curzon Ashton, with Grundy making at least four decent saves in the first 5 minutes alone.

“I started pre-season really well with Bury and thought I’d stand a good chance of getting the number one jersey. Then in the last week of pre-season training, I picked up and ankle injury and it took me a long time to recover. It was November before I was running again and obviously my fitness wasn’t good. So I was out of the picture quiet a lot. That’s why I wanted to go on loan- and I was in training one day and the gaffer just told me what happened to Sam. I jumped at the chance to get involved”

Though a Manchester United fan himself, Grundy admits he didn’t know more than a few basic facts about FC until he lined up in a pre-season friendly against them in July 2006.

“Bury won 2-0 in the end and I was very impressed about how good FC were. But what really sticks in my memory was the noise of support made. There were about 3000 there for a pre-season friendly and it was a great atmosphere. Saying that, I was still shocked when I joined. We played Bamber Bridge there in my second game and I only expected about 100 people there, but there were over 1000 fans there that day. It is staggering really. The support is staggering.”

Born in Bolton, Grundy’s first experience of football came as a child kicking a ball around with his friends on fields and streets of Heaton. He got his first taste of competitive action when his mum Anne and dad Phil got in touch with junior side Oxford Grove.

“I had a great five years there. I met some good lads and I am still in touch with a couple now- Steve Burke who plays for Chorley and my ex- Bury team mate Andy Parrish. The coaching was really helpful, and I learned a lot about fitness, competitiveness, and that it is important to enjoy the game.”

He was aged just nine when Bury asked him to join their junior side. It came about when father of Andy Parrish recommended him to the club, where he stayed ever since. After finished his education at Church Road primary and Canon Slade high schools the teenage Grundy was fortunate to earn a two year contract at Gig Lane.

Grundy is the first to admit that his first few months as a full timer with the youth team were far from perfect. Out of favour with the coach, he found a few games and found himself having to work that bit extra harder to impress. Eventually his determination paid off and a run of good form saw him rise quickly as a regular in the youth team, to a name on the reserve team and on the first-team bench.

“It was quite a year. I’d gone from not really doing much with the youth team to doing really well and getting up there. It was very exiting travelling to away games with the first team, staying in hotels, training with them, and learning from them- that was a great experience.”

It was not until the following November that the stopper made his full debut, appearing before millions of viewers on BBC2 in a tricky FA cup tie against Weymouth, which ended 2-2 with the Shakers triumphing 4-3 in the replay.

“It was really nerve-wracking being on TV at a typical non-league ground I think I did well and, in the end, we got through and beat Chester in the second road. That was a good time. Everything was going well in the league and we were progressing in the cup but then we were thrown out for not registering a playing and after that, our whole season derailed. Chris Casper taught me a lot and was always really good with me before he left the club.”

It ended with Bury finishing two places above the relegation zone, ready for another shot at promotion this season. That was, of course, before Grundy’s injury and loan to FC, which he said he has really enjoyed

“I have spoken to fans before and after games and their feedback has been nothing short of brilliant. To have that encouragement really helps you and you know that you’re going out to play for them. The win against Skelmersdale was a great start and I was pleasantly surprised about the standard of football. Everything since had been positive and I am really confident with my game.
